For example two of the most famous examples of grunge bands are Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but yet the two bands sound absolutely nothing alike. Soundgarden got lumped in there, but they were different again. Stone Temple Pilots. Different yet again.
I think it was more about flannel shirts and scruffy hair as it was about any kind of musical similarity. And the fact that many of the bands seemed to originate in the same corner of the US.
That's what was great about the music then, they all sounded different. But you have to admit, not looking at pictures at them, just listening to the music, there are definite similarities in the music. The down tuning, the attitude, the lyrics, the sound was some what similar, but not quite, they all had the same aura about them, and yet they were entirely different. It was amazing.
