sound like starting line part two to me, just as panic at the disco sounds exactly like fall out boy to me.

just another example of terrible bands ripping off other crappy bands that i almost liked when i was 13.. six years later the only thing thats changed is a whole new group of 14 year olds thinking they're listening to something new.

also, blame it on living in the u.s. but i've only just heard of joy divsion and i love it.

I am 28, and I heard Joy Division for the first time about 2 weeks ago, and couldn't hardly believe how heavy they were.

The only song I knew before that is LOve Will Tear Us Apart, which I hate, but after hearing Dead Souls by accident on a friend's ipod, I am a convert.

i had heard a nine inch nails cover of dead souls on the crow soundtrack and in the scene where he is following the crow on rooftops. good old trent reznor, why write when you cover other pioneers of genres haha

I already knew the NIN version, but I assumed the track had been "heavied up" by Reznor. Wasn't I shocked to learn that it is - to my ears, at least - extremely similar to the original.

As for owning The Downward Spiral... never. The recording of the album was an exploitation of a tragedy, fuelling the cult fascination with the Manson Murders. Icky.

not saying that, he's got his own thing going on, but i find the bulk of songs i like from him were covers, but i think johnny cash gave him a taste of his own medicine. i think anyone would agree that cash's version of hurt conveyed alot more then trent could've ever hoped to with that track in particular.

Trent Reznor's sounds alot deeper than Cash's, the only reason people say that they prefer the Cash version is because he died shortly after it came out, it's your opinion though i guess.

If people wanna hear heaviness, listen to NIN's "Ruiner", the riffs are something else, but the outro is brutal.

I'm not familiar with Hurt (either version), but my general opinion on the Johnny Cash covers is that they are overrated. Sure, I like them, and yes, they do tend to be emotional, and quite good arrangements of familiar songs, but part of their appeal comes from the fact that he sounded so damn unhealthy.

Still, his versions of The Mercy Seat and especially Rusty Cage (waaaay better than the original) are really great.
