second hand jaguar advice

Hi!

It's my first post, so hi to everyone..

Today just found an old jaguar in a very crappy shop, very cheap so i bought it!

I was looking for a guitar, since my gibson is back in spain. So the jaguar looked cool, but its a bit thrashed..with scratches and rusty hardware. Its a japanese model, white with blue pickguard, the previous owner changed the bridge pick for a seymour duncan. No tremolo bar and the tone knob is missing. I didnt even try the sound yet! That shop guys didnt know what an amp is..

I need some advice about the restoration, as i have never touched a jaguar before. Is there something important i should check/consider? Should i take it to a pro shop or is there some basic setup i can do myself?

if you spend time with your guitars and their is nothing ####ed up with it you can do it all yourself. how much was it?

10.000 yen, some 100 dolars i think. I tried it today and it sounds! There is a bit of noise from the guitar, but for what i read thats normal with the jaguar. The upper tone control doesnt work, but everything else looks like working.

I do have to clean it!!

Something inside the tremolo bridge is loose, when i move the guitar sounds like something is out of place there.

Edit to say that the steel cylinder were you put the tremolo bar is inside the hole..

Have you plugged it in yet? After you clean it and tighten up the tremelo system, I would make sure all the other different switches and knobs work-- it will also help you figure out what does what-- and find out what your ideal settings are.

Personally I never really use the tremelo, but I like having it there just in case.

Was cheap because it was not a music shop, and its really in an "odd" condition.. In a real shop would be from 400$ second hand, i think.

Would be easy to fix the upper tone control by myself? Its the only one that doesnt work.. It just rolls without stopping, as the volume one does.

you mean that the tone pot just rolls around, you can push it in either direction until your hand falls apart?

thats either a broken (physically broken) pot (extremely unlikely)

or the glue has come loose (problably the problem), AND theres a wiring/electronics issue. take it apart and have a look.

You'll find most things you need on that website, if you need any parts try guitarpartsresource.com they are excellent.

The worst thing about setting a Jaguar up is the bridge but i'd assume the previous owner has done that considering the use its had.

This weekend i will have time to reapair the guitar, already ordered some of the pieces i need, including a mustang bridge. I hope i can fix the tremolo system myslef. I will upload some picture..

Just one more question.. Can i use a mustang tremolo bar in the jaguar??

It probably would work, but the Mustang's tremolo arm is much shorter than the Jag's one. I'd just get another Jag one off the internet or somewhere.

Here is a picture of the girl.. after a deep clean, fixing and a set of new strings it starts to look better! Of course you cannot see in the picture all the scratches, including a big open one on the back.. but it sounds!

Now waiting for the mustang bridge and the buttons.

😲😲 That pickguard is BLUE. I strangely like it. It's not like it's subtly hinting at blue, it's fully committed BLUE.

i thought i remembered from another thread that hardware stores dont usually cary the right screws? ill bring a screw into town tommorow and check after school.
