I got a CIJ Jazzmaster the other week, it's been great so far, although i have had to raise the action to prevent the notes choking out with bands (which is fine since i like high action anyway), however, the bridge is still making a worrying rattling noise. At first, i thought it was just the strings rattling against the saddles and wasn't causing any problems, but today while i was playing i looked down at the bridge and saw that one of the grub screws had almost worked its way out of the saddle 😲

Is there a way i can stop this from happening again? i need a bit of peace of mind. I'm told in the shop that i got it from that Graphtech stringsaver saddles sort out everything that's wrong with the stock saddles (they have a set for

super common problem. LocTite will make it all ok.

I have the Graphtech's on my Jag, combined with a buzzstop, absolutely flawless.

Aug - would nail varnish also do that job? that's what i was told when i took it to the shop to ask. Also is this a permanent fix or something that will need constant attention?

Richie - So the screws are threaded tighter on the graphtechs, and don't rattle at all?

Dont waste your money buying new parts. Put some vaseline on the threads, someone rubbed a little candle wax on theirs. All you are doing is stopping loose threads rattle. Do the bridge screws as well.

Loctite and nail varnish works but it can make future adjustments a nightmare.

won't vaseline or candle wax just make it easier for the screws to work their way out because of lubrication? 😕 it's not so much the rattling that's the problem, it's the fact that the grub screws are trying to escape 😆

i'm having no problems with the bridge screws, just the saddle screws. PTFE tape has also been suggested, although the grub screws might be too small and finely threaded for that to work.

I never even thought of Vaseline... sounds like a great idea. Loctite can be a nightmare if you go crazy with it...but, I find the smallest drop keeps 'em in place, and future adjustments aren't at all a problem. But, whatevz... there are a dozen solutions to this problem, just pick the one that you think is best.

well i'm not the most steady-handed person around so putting liquid stuffs on those tiny grub screws doesn't really seem like a good idea to me - i got

for just using the existing bridge, you can try things like vaseline/candle wax which are easily reversible, or get the bridge intonated and set up perfectly and then do something more permanent like glue, etc... or like aug said, moderate doses.

i'm a bit skeptical about vaseline and candle wax, can someone give me some confirmation that these don't make the problem worse? I'm trying to make them fit tighter in the saddles so that they don't work their way out, i'm under the impression that vaseline and candle wax would just make them slide out faster.

edit: this may be a stupid idea but aren't the saddles pretty much the same on the underside? if so would flipping them over mean that they'd work their way out of the bottom, but the force of the strings wouldn't allow that to happen?

No, it stops vibration so the screws cant work themselves loose. PTFE is okay for the bridge posts but too fiddly for the little saddle screws.

well, it was fiddly, but i was going to see which of these substances i had and put whatever i could get hold of, and ended up with PTFE tape - it was frustrating because of how small those little screws are, but it's definitely done the job - the stock bridge is no longer making any rattling or buzzing noises 😁

Hate to double post (most forums hate this!) but i've got an update on my progress:

Eventually, after fixing everything, the strings started jumping out of the saddles (luckily, just about an hour AFTER i did my first gig with it!)

So i've replaced them with graphtechs and the whole guitar seems flawless now 😁
