Are you using a 60s era blackface, or a silverface? I always thought you had a '59 Tweed Bassman for some reason or other.
Well yeah they are all three very different beasts. The Tweed era Bassman is what the original Marshall amp circuits were replicating. It has the super rich warm drive, but it gets really dirty just after 4 on the volume. So I want one that gets to about 6 before breakup, so I might just look into a Tweed era Twin, cause this is more there range, but I like the bassman's tone a lot more. Or I still might get a blackface Super Reverb, cause this is more its territory, plus it's already got the Reverb.
On a Blackface or Silverface I think you could, but not on the Tweed Era, there's no preamp out on those if I recall correctly. And I wouldn't want to do that anyway even you could with Tweed era, that would just be another endless journey of trying out different power amps until you found one that was suitable, and even then why would you want to do that when the Bassman already has one of the most legendary power amp circuits ever designed. I just want one that's revoiced for more headroom and reverb tank added.
