I haven't done this yet because the only wire I can see going to the jack is the green one. Is that the one you mean?

On Jaguars, particularly the Japanese ones, there is usually just one wire going to the center lug of the output jack, that is because often times the person wiring the guitar is using the control plate itself as the grounding point for the pots and output jack, instead of a separate wire. This makes sense as the control plate acts as one big grounding pad anyway. That's one thing I like a bout Jaguars, they make the wiring a little easier and more manageable for such a complex guitar circuit.

I'll My thoughts on the Jaguar HH Specials

- The thinness of the pickups kinda-sorta negate the pickups being humbuckers. They are not very powerful (mine was 7.8K in the neck and 8.2K in the bridge), and they squeal because the chrome covers are basically free to vibrate. The way to get rid of the squeal is to wax pot them with the holes blocked and the covers on, or remove the covers.

- The lack of a vibrato is a turn off for me for reasons most people here already know. I don't want to take a $500+ guitar that's practically brand new and take a router to it, so I sold mine for a vintage 66 Mustang, while I may have lost the rhythm circuit, I won the prize of phase switching and a vibrato. Someone out there now has a practically bone stock HH Jaguar Special, as I wax potted the pickups.

Yeah, there is only one and its green. I guess that Mad-Mike is right, that the control plate is the grounding point.

My Jag is a craftedinjapan, out of the factory in the last four years.

So I'm guessing I shouldn't move that green one from the jack to the volume pot? Or should I just try it.

I would really like more treble as the volume goes down.

ok, on the volume pot there are three lugs, one of them is bent and soldered to the back of the pot. connect the OTHER two, which does electronically the same thing, and might be easier.

Right, I've done that, connecting the middle lug with the one that goes straight to the tone pot.

The result is that when turning the volume back from full, it does retain the treble, and it doesn't drop in volume suddenly like it used to, but... now it just doesn't drop at all, it doesn't do what a volume knob should do until you get right around to what should be the lowest end and then it drops suddenly.

So maybe there aren't any quick fixes?

I don't use the tone knob much, I just keep it on full treble. But I would like a volume knob that decreases/increases evenly, as I gig with a big band and need to adjust volume slightly without reaching over to the amp.

Any ideas?

Could I try better pots,

or replace the tone pot with another volume pot so I could keep the sound that I like when the proper volume is on full, and adjust it with a second volume?

Or is that the most stupid thing you've ever heard?

With the CV Duo, everything was grounded to the PG.

i have the same problem, exactly the same thing happened. you could try different pots. also if you have any spare 500-1000k pots lying around, you might want to give them a shot. (from middle lug to ground) i think it could be that the impedance of the pickups are low enough that you don't get significant volume differences until you get pretty low in the pot's range. i still think its an improvement, but not there yet.... also, are you finding that with the volume on low, the bass cut seems to have different effects... ie cut more?

I'll be honest, this jag is the first real quality guitar I've bought (a couple of weeks ago) and its the first time I've ever looked under the pickguard and messed with the wires (and the first time I've soldered which I'm feeling pretty good about).

So I don't have the experience to tell you if the sound quality changes that much.

But what I have noticed is that after the first mod you suggested (switching the blue wire on the tone pot to the centre) that has quite an effect on the volume when the bass cut switch is on/up. Its almost a more even decrease/increase than the proper volume pot. So if nothing more can be done I think there is now a greater range of tones and volumes than before! 😁

well the bass cut's cutoff point is actually above the tone controls cutoff point, so when you roll down the tone control, all frequencies are cut.

This weekend I bought a replacement Volume pot which seems to be working.

The original (in my 2007 CIJ Jag) volume pot was a 1Meg A, apparently the A means Logarithmic.

My local shop didn't have 1meg pots so I took a 250 B. The B meaning Linear.

The guy explained that the Linear pots tend to have a more even increase/decrease compared to the Logarithmic pots, which tend to have a sharper increase/decrease and then level off.

That confirmed the problem I was having.

I can't hear a difference between the 1M and the 250, maybe someone can tell me, and I might try to get one.

But there is a difference between the Logarithmic and Linear pots. Its a more even sweep and there is no huge change in tone like I was getting before.

So I'm quite please with the results. Hope that might help someone.

As someone who had the same feeling towards my CIJ Jaguar HH, I can help here. 😁

While I think the Dragsters are fine as humbuckers, they suck in a Jaguar. They sound like low output, generic humbuckers. You get a *tiny* bit of character coming through them, but they basically kill the Jaguar tone.

I posted here with this issue months ago. I wanted single coils in my Jag, but crap kept coming up and taking away my mod budget.

A few weeks ago, everything fell into place. I found a set of CIJ Jaguar pickups, a CIJ pickguard (despite what was said early on in this thread, a standard CIJ pickguard WILL fit perfectly), as well as a Bigsby B5 in a matter of a day or two.

I also ordered a set of Jaguar pickup covers, and the correct knobs from guitar parts resource, and a Vibramate to mount the Bigsby without drill holes.

Everything fell into place further by arriving on the same day. That night, I put everything together, and here's the end result;

The Jaguar pickups (CIJ's) sound great, and did EXACTLY what I wanted. It sounds like a Jaguar now. We can argue that the trem type makes a huge difference, or that the wiring isn't spot on all day and night, but the fact is that this thing sounds just like a Jaguar should.

Some things to keep in mind, however, are;

-The humbucker routs are too deep to accommodate the Jaguar pickup screws. Use a spacer of some sort, and the same screws that the humbuckers are attached to the pickup rings with. I used some thick, black cardboard strips cut to fit the routs, and it worked great.

-Traditional Jaguar pickguards have one extra screw hole when compared to the HH guard. This extra screw hole is almost directly over the neck humbucker's excessively large rout - a dummy screw or screw head could just be glued in, or possibly wedged in. Other than this, a CIJ Jaguar pickguard should fit perfectly.

-If cash is tight, skip the pickup claws. Yeah, they're cool as hell, but it's debatable if they do much to the tone, and they're pricey ($10-$12 USD. Each.) I skipped them, thinking I could grab a pair in between string changes for cheap used.

This is a bit of a late response, but thanks a ton Anti! I really think I will change the pickups, and that info is sure to come in handy. So do you think I should opt for the Jaguar pickups or would other single coils sound good? I guess probably the Jaguar pickups if I'm going for the Jaguar sound. But I'm not necessarily, I just really like the look and feel of these guitars. Actually, I haven't experienced the actual Jaguar sound so I think I should do that.
