McC, no harm done.
But just to clarify, I'm not a grunge man, and I only really use the ds-1 with the distortion and tone both set to 0. I am mainly concerned with playing blues at the moment, and I just use the pedal to dirty up my Telecaster a bit.
I once used the ds-1 with 'Teh Kurdtz' settings (tone on 5, distortion on 10) and it sounded revolting. I can see why people wouldn't like the thing, but my needs are simple.
You know when my playing shifted from hardrock to blues I was using my DS-1 that way too, but pretty soon I realized it didn't suit my tone needs for blues very well and got into the whole tubescreamer phase (which I'm still kind of in).
Anyways Rob, I think you would really like the Danelectro Transparent Overdrive. Not so much mid-hump as a tubescreamer, and it has better bass response, and it only costs $40, AND its true-bypass in a metal casing.
You'll notice a world of difference from your DS-1, the drive on the Danelectro is way smoother, not as gritty sounding, and it lets more of your natural guitar tone and playing dynamics through, so you have room for more expression.
Check one out if you're getting into the blues thing and don't want to spend a fortune on tubescreamers and their infinite list of clones.
