Best guitar for sonic Youth

Hello everyone!

I konw Thurston Moore and Lee renaldo use fender jazzmaster but what another guitar has the same sound like the jazzmasters?? I want to play Sonic youth and please help me to find the same tones .... 😁

i would go for a mustang, a bit pricey (but not as much as a jazzy) they get a real good SY sound imo, they are an awesome guitar.

Thurston Moore also changed the tuning and gauges of the strings, Have to think about it.

A guitar that keep the tuning stable could be good....

You'll need heavy gauge strings because some of SYs tunings are more like a baritone than standard, light gauge would'nt work, and short scale guitars dont lend themselves to it either. Which is why they mostly use Jazzmasters.

Other than maybe the past few albums, I don't think Sonic Youth ever really had a specific tone. All of their gear is (or at least was) so inconsistent and has been modified in such a way that it would be pointless to just say "they play Jazzmasters", because that is not going to work.

If you have a low budget, then just buy something cheap that you feel comfortable playing.

I'd say Sonic Youth's choice in gear has varied FAR too wildly the past twenty years to honestly identify a particular "best" example.

Jazzmasters are the obvious choice, as they have consistently been the most popular choice for both Thurston and Lee, but I'd hardly call SY the "quintessential Jazzmaster tone"

IMO, the key to SY's sound has much more to do with alternate tunings, volume, and pickups than anything else.

That said, buy a Jazzmaster. There are affordable choices out there---more than ever before.

Yes, thanks i think i looking for the "warm tone" of the clean of the jazzmaster....

I listened a lot of cleans... but some are very different to the jazzmaster

Just some cheap strat and a behringer superfuzz and any amp will do the job
