just get any POS guitar you can and bang it out, dont spend mucho bucks trying to exactly recreate an admittedly lo fi sound.

Look at shortscale.org, there is a thread on there about a sort of tele with P-rails.

They sound awesome, and would work well on a mustang if you put in extra routes for a gibby toggle switch

He's about right though. Sonic Youths sound is more in their tunings than their gear, except for the third bridge stuff which means you will need a Jag/Jazzy trem.

Yeah, they do but they generally prefer jazzmasters which are full-scale

What you mean step down or drop tuning? Well shortscales are really susceptible to buzz due to the fact there isn't a lot of string tension compared to a full scale.
