Dream Mustang(ish) Project

Hi everyone,

long time no see. I've been a bit busy but also been mucking about with ideas for my dream guitar based on playing experiences with jags, 'stangs and strats (my favourite guitars!). At some point in the next year or so I'll be coming across quite a bit of money and was wondering how possible you guys think it would be to build this guitar & if there are any flaws with it at this initial stage...

- Mustang body cos of it's compact size and lightness

- Jaguar/Jazzy Tremolo (best I've ever played)

- The bridge has been pushed back to accomodate a 25.5" neck or 24.75 conversion

- Strat single coils placed within reference to strat scale length and pickup positions

- Pretty much all strat wiring with mustang Input jack replaced with 2nd tone knob (input will be on the bottom corner like a tele)

- There will also be a 5-way strat selector somewhere on it (no mustang switches) 😛

What do you guys think? Please be ruthless as you can!

I have nothing technical to contribute, but I will say that I like the idea.

First off let me say I love the idea of this & really hope you get to actually do it.

Now here's my thoughts:

I'm not sure if you'll get the right spacing for the pups to be just like a strat with the smaller body (bridge to neck heel distance) but maybe with the bridge pushed back, routs & a custom pickguard. You could also just move them closer & get a "close to" strat sound anyways so I still think you should go for it.

Next, the strat 5 way selector: I'm not seeing anywhere you could put that & not have it be awkwardly in your way a lot. Have you thought about replacing the 2nd tone knob w/ a 5 (or even) 6 way rotoury switch? Could look cool & w/ a 6 you could add some extra (read *non-strat) sounds.

Those are my thoughts. Whatever you do just do what you like & don't listen to us too much...you have to be the one to play the thing not us...unless your going to share?

Yeah I think Ill have to build from scratch using completely custom routing on the body and a custom pickguard. Drilling the bridge, trem and neck pocket using the scale of a jazzy should make an accurate 25.5" which in theory would leave enough room for the strat pup configuration I'm hoping.

I think you're definitely on to something with the 5-way being in the way and will have to scrap it - a rotary is a great idea! I thought the 3 black knobs looked a bit goofy anyway. 3 mustang switches is also a good back-up plan and would give the extra options of all 3 pups at once, the bridge and neck together and lots of out-phasing while keeping the 2nd tone pot.

With one tone pot, you can wite it up to neck and middle while leaving the bridge open.

Also, rotary's are great. I'm getting one installed on my Jagmaster righ now. I really liked the one on my 51.

Here's a mock up with a rotary, you guys are right - it looks awesome! I was mulling over losing a tone control but to be honest my guitars barely ever come down from 10 anyway.

I think i'd make one of the pots push/pull so i can do a "blow" switch for all 3 pickups on at once aswell to still get the full 7 combinations.

Also how about a mustang switch to knock the middle and neck out of phase?

And with Strat pickups you can choose between literally thousands of different models where as there are only 12 or so very expensive Jag pups on the market. By going for the 25.5" neck and strat pups there's a lot more to choose from for a lot less money.

Plus I'm after the jag trem 😛

I like the subtlety and sponginess of a jag trem and it looks awesome too. i think floyds look too modern and are hard to control for the type of stuff I like to play, I'm not into divebombing and shredding.

Not to mention that re-stringing a Floyd is an epic journey in itself.

i was thinking of doing something like this on a musicmaster... the only problem is the mustang/musicmaster body is only about 4cm thick and the jag trem itself runs about 38mm deep... so its cutting it pretty close

should still be possible, though

your design is very much like the G&L...

the G&L's dual tremolo sounds and feels like the dynamic/jag tremolo, and it also stays in tune for days.

try contacting the G&L custom shop, and have them somehow fit your design.

I got my G&L Legacy USA custom with blueburst/natural binding and hum/single toggle switch(from S-500) for $1300.

anyway, great design!
