Shoegaze Effects

Hey guys, i'm looking to get a shoegaze-y effect out my pedals, but im not sure how to get it from them, i have a

Ehx double muff,

Line 6 DL4

DoD Flanger

and vesta fire chorus

also on the DL4 how do i get it do warp my sounds like ive seen people do it with analog delay, but can it be done with the DL4, i got a weak sound just by messing with the delay speed..?

w/the delay, turn up feedback high, and turn down speed. play something, then mess with speed, that should give you lots of pitch shifty type stuff.

shoegaze is how you play not effects.

but put your DL4 on a short delay time (in one if the analog settings).

not really sure about muffs they never seamed very shoegaze to me, but meh it could work.

i think you should invest in a high gain pedal and or some of the deviever products.

lots of brands make cool pedals perfect for shoegaze.

Agreed about muffs not being very shoegaze-y (unless theyre layered ala siamese dream, and yes i know thats not a shoegaze album 😛 )... Didnt kevin shields use heavy metal pedals? Imo the most important shoegaze effect is delay/reverb, so play around with the delay under distortion to get some wall of sound textures (i use a no name digital delay and a damelectro black paisley btw)

try putting the muff after a modulated delay or reverse delay, that should sound pretty crazy.

Well some common themes there seem to be tremelos, dirt pedals, phaser, pitch effects, that digitech delay sampler, and digital rack mylti effects.

imo the basis of it has to do with finding the right delay time/feedback ratio and playing chords with open voicing, power chords dont give that chaos

Why?

In my experience, the most 'instant' Shoegaze effect is the Boss PS-2. They dont make them anymore and the PS-5 is a different pedal.

Well, Harrison is right, its about delay settings and what you play more than anything. If you let the delay layer over itself but keep the effect signal low so it does'nt turn into a mess of repeats it creates a lot of ambience. Chorus and Phase add texture, Pitch Shift makes it more dimensional. Almost like a 12 string sound, which as we know sound great on open chord voicings and chord progressions with 'drone' notes.

Its a case of playing around, but to be honest you could create a huge sound with just a PS-2 and an OD pedal.

When you listen to this music its almost like a mini orchestra.

I suppose some people have different interpretations of what "Shoegaze" music is. I prefer the more ambient variety based more on modulation (Chorus, Flanger, Phaser) drenched in reverb, cascading delays and more reverb rather than heavy distortion and fuzz. Think of bands like Kitchens of Distinction, Slowdive, Alison's Halo, Air Formation, Tears Run Rings, Bethany Curve, A Shoreline Dream, etc..

I would tend to say that Delay and Reverb are the essential effects to use in creating spacey ambient/shoegaze/dreampop/post-rock, but the fact is there's nothing set in stone as to what pedals to use in order to create a big effects-laden wall of sound. It doesn't matter how many pedals you use to create your wall of sound either.The real challenge is being creative with the effects you've got. It's about creating soundscapes, not about what brand of pedal you use or how many pedals you use.

They were awesome, i saw them at Sheffield around 1989. The guitarist had about 15 Boss pedals, i remember how impressed i was. The soundscaping he achieves in songs like 'third time we opened the capsule' and 'margarets injection' is some of the best FX use i've ever heard.

i Love trem pedals, dano would be good i think. and i never liked the idea of buying a pricey(ish) boss trem... after all its function is limited (even tho i do love what that one function is!)

See I've been using the EH Holy Stain for my tremolo for ages but I hate that I can't get rid of the reverb on it, so I'm phasing the Stain out with dedicated pedals. First the Tuna Melt, which I've been childishly attracted to 'cause two of the guitarists from Oceansize use 'em, then probably the Hardwire RV-7 reverb, then maybe an EH Memory Boy so's I have a delay that self-oscillates and I can use my expression pedal with... then a Whammy, and the chain will be complete. 😁

But I do digress, and apologise. Though I reckon you could get some decent shoegaze-ness out of that setup, just to throw it out there...

Devi Ever's pedals are awesome too. I really liked the Bit Mangler as well with the joystick control on it. It's just such a cool idea, it's clearly one of those pedals specifically designed to be dicked about with.

But yeah man, get us some demos up ASAP...

nanoverb on reverse reverb setting into a boss hm-2 ftw.

i have a black russian muff and i use it for shoegazey stuff. with the tone and sustain turned up full i think its really good for shoegazey stuff with my jazzmaster.
