The Grolsch gaskets work like a charm but at $10.00 for a 4-pack of the beer (that's how much it is here anyway) the washers would be much cheaper. But no, the strap doesn't slide over the rubbers and I haven't had them dry out and crack on me. There's a reason that people have been using them for decades for this very purpose.
