This is how cobain wrote songs, i remember him saying so in an interview on TV in 92 or so.
(not verbatim but you get the general idea)
"Lyrics are secondary, the music always comes first. I just write a poem or thoughts and then usually at the end of it i make fun of the whole thing or something..........music has to be fun and you gotta do it for yourself or there's no point to it.....I'm a terrible guitar player, I know it, but I have fun"
Take his point but don't try to imitate anyone, just be yourself. If you turn out to write original stuff and get successful then good, if you suck but like playing guitar just be a bedroom player....so long as you're enjoying yourself, that's all that matters, not success and definitely not money!
Kurt never wanted to be more popular than he was in 89 and just wanted to sell enough albums to have like 300-400 a week income, that's it, just enough to live. But considering he lived poorly for his entire life he saw the chance to be financially secure for the rest of his life and took it. He hated fame and to contradict him self, he said he even hated rich people while being one himself.
He done it for the music in the early days, not the money and that's why my favorite nirvana albums are Bleach,Incesticide and all the B-sides (most were written pre 91) because they were never real popular. I think he wrote more catchy songs intentionally for Nevermind and In Utero, to make money after he decided to take the music industry for all its worth. He sold out to his musical and social morals, he said so himself. That doesn't mean his popular albums sucked, they don't, but he did sell out, he was the first to tell everyone that.
He was gonna quit Nirvana before he died, and that's what resulted in his death IMHO but that's another topic, he was sick of it, he hated being a sell out. His performances had declined, he just wasn't into it as much any more. Being a heroin addict of 14+ years myself I know he continued as he did for as long as he did for money for heroin, its that simple.
In the end he hated performing live, all the sell out songs and that's why he was so phucking high on smack on so many shows, he hated what he'd become. When he did put on a good show was because he was in one of his happy phases. You have to understand that a lot of heroin addicts are also manic depressives, depending on the drug and your supply of the drug and how secure you feel at any given moment concerning the drug. You live for heroin, everything else is secondary, even your family.
Being a heroin addict and a guitarist and a long time fan I can relate to him and understand him more than the average person can. Most people don't see the real picture regarding him and his music etc
A fairly large piece of my passion for music has died too, because of heroin.
BTW, he did intend starting a new band with Michael Stipe from R.E.M but that never happend.
My point is, mainly to you teenagers, if you are going to idolize anyone, Kurt Cobain is not an ideal idol, appreciate his music by all means, I do myself, but the guys from dino and SY are much better idols for kids IMO.
Besides the riches and fame, my life has almost been a xerox of his, its not fun at all, not at all!!!
If you like music then stay away from addictive drugs and just play for the fun of it and hey, you might even get somewhere with it.
I give this advice because I get the feeling that there's more than a few people on this forum heavily influenced by Cobain so just be aware of much you are influenced by others. Be original and you will be more like your idols than if you try and copy them!!!!
