Have you properly looked into the Westboro Baptist Church? Their interpretation of Christianity is based on taking everything in the Bible to-the-letter literally. They've probably read it a lot more closely than you have.
Shirley Phelps-Roper said in an interview I watched that a lot of the stuff they do doesn't actually sit that well with her, for instance she personally has nothing against gay people, but they do it because they've read the Bible and according to what they've read, it's what God wants. I'm not defending them by any means, their views are horrible, but you really have to respect their solidarity for being the "truest" Christians around, really.
I, by the way, am a dogged atheist/ anti-theist/ secular humanist, and think all religion is a form of control and inherently evil. I mean, I've read the Bible, and I've read the Qur'an, and I interpreted both to be pretty much as Fred Phelps and his bunch, and most Islamic extremists, seem to have interpreted a lot of it. The only difference is, I didn't take it seriously. I believe that people get their morals from more of a group survivalist reflex rather than objectively. I mean, "God says that's wrong so I don't do it" seems a bit empty to me.
I know you guys are church-going Christians and stuff, I respect that that's how you've been brought up and what you believe, and I don't mean to offend by what I'm saying 'cause I appreciate that you're nice guys and stuff, you've just been given a different brand of the same religion as far as I can see, i.e. a more apologetic version of it that edits out the bad bits.
Again, I don't mean to offend. If you believe I'm wrong then you shouldn't be offended anyway, I don't see this as being any different to me criticizing your support of a particular political party or football team or something. I might start a thread about this elsewhere actually, or move this to it, religious debates are something of a hobby of mine.

Plus, it just looks like a generally cool place. I've been toying with the idea of moving there after I've graduated and paid off all my debts and stuff.
