Valve King and Hot Rod

Hey,

My friends and I are trying to make a band... and I need a bigger amp. I(Mustang) was planning on getting a Hot Rod Deluxe(40Wtube1x12), cause that clean is just brilliant, and my fellow guitarist(Tele) is planning on the Peavey ValveKing 112(50Wtube1x12). We play rock (crossing between Blues'y to Grunge to Metal(leads) and almost everything in between) and my friend is the lead.

Would these amps suffice for unmic'd playing in normal situations?

Also, are there any negative comments(or good) about these amps, or would suggest another amp in the same range?

Depends on what size venues you'll be playing, 40 watts of valve amp ought to be enough if you're starting out.

yea, very nice amp, the clean is nice and surfy, and it has a great OD channel

Depends how "clean" you want your clean channel to stay.

turn it up and back off the volume control on your guitar to clean it up.

Clean is not all that important... I mean clean is good, but I love the natural tube drive more, and I will probably end up putting a distortion pedal(Line 6 DM4 or something) in front of it. So it will not matter that much...I just enjoy the clean for mostly messing around and songwriting, etc....

people have their distorted sounds louder than their clean sounds usually, because od/dist pedals were created to replicate the original guitar-volume method. people would slash their speakers or open up a huge marshall and then go "oh fukbeans, i want clean again for a minute," and back off the guitar's volume. you don't notice a huge overall volume loss until you're down to around 4 or 3, which is more than enough required to clean it up.

well For my mustang, I have noticed that with my mustang there is a sharp difference between 9 and 10. But I don't play there to begin with so it is all cool.

Also, I can't find info on this Fender Prosonic(I only saw an ebay bid to show me what it was), is it discontinued? I am interested in it as an option now.

ADD: Also, Should I bite the bullet and go for the deville? and should my friend just get the 212 valveking? Or do you think 1x12 is fine?

I have the 212 Valveking, and it is very loud, overkill for you (overkill for me too probably, but I got it for the same price as the 112). The cleans on it are very nice, and it stays clean a long way up. It has a lot of gain too. Its a very versatile amp, but in terms of pure valve tone, I prefer my JMP60 (but that has no headroom on the clean channel at all - even with s/c pickups, and doensn't have a lot of gain. Its a one trick pony, just a very good trick)

Not ridiculously so, spesh the 50 watters. Pete borrowed a JMP from a friend for the 2nd to last Illuminati3 tour, it sounded really cool but not a "clean" amp by any means.

it starts getting crunch around 2 or 2.5, however this is neighbor-angering volume on a 100 watter.
