The main - and only - reason I did that is because I don't own a drill, so I did the best I could with what I had.
General update...
The entire project had gone pear-shaped ☹
The pickup I bought was cactus. Sadly my luthier pulled it to pieces trying to find the problem, so I cant get my money back. I have put in the old Affinity pickup.
Also, it turns out that my frind and I COMPLETELY screwed up the wiring. We were following a diagram that had the tabs for the selector switch on both sides, 4 per side, in a zigzag pattern, but the selector that I had had all of the tabs running down one side. When doing the wiring, we treated it as though it followed the same sequence as the one in the diagram (which, I learned today, it doesn't).
Additionally, the pots are screwed. The tone control is doing nothing except making scratchy noises, and the overall volume of the guitar is very weak. The guitar sounds like the tone is stuck on 0, and the volume is maxing out at 5. The only position that works fairly well is the neck or 'dark' position (tone bypassed and running through a resistor to produce a bassier tone, for those who don't know). It sounds like it is supposed to, but still suffers from a lack of volume.
So the guitar is pretty mucg going to be put into mothballs until I can afford to take it back to the luthier to have it completely rewired. And I mean COMPLETELY. I will be asking him to replace ALL of the electronics, including putting in another(!) pickup I will be getting.
Oh, and the scratchplate needs some work to make it fit, too, but I expected that.
It's amazing how much can go wrong doing a very simple thing. Lesson learned 😀
