Just placed my order for a Sonic Blue Cobain Mustang today from Musicians Friend. I got it down to $896 and I couldn't say no to it. Very excited this came out. I have been wanting one since I was 14.

The dark lake placid blue with the stripes is SWEEEEET and they are releasing left handed models... 😲

If only they released them before xmas, it would have been perfect.

My sonic blue Cobain Mustang arrived today. It's very sweet. I didnt thing it would be delivered until the end of February... Arh well, happy days!

Finally unboxed mine. I like it but the set up on it is pretty bad from the factory. I see this as a guitar with lots of potential after taking it to my luthier for a professional set up and upgrades: different tuners, locking abr-1 bridge w/graph tech saddles, vintage cloth style wiring, flip/lock the tailpiece, fret job, tusk xl nut, etc. I am a huge fan of the Tonestyler so that will be going in to replace the tone pot. I have been curious abut the Shadow Kill Pot to so that might make an appearance to replace the existing volume control.

The neck is nice and slim. I have forgotten how the Mustang neck feels. Brings back memories.

Hmm... dunno... never been a fan of artist series guitars and reissued Mustangs in general are too close in price to the vintage stuff out there. A very original 60s mustang might be, what $1500-$1700 - a modified less original one with bags of mojo could be no more than a reissue.

I don't get the seymour HB on the compstang since kurt's well known blue compstang had single coils or a hotrail(?) (as seen in this video)

Bringing up a dead topic but i just seen this,. Honestly i think it's for budget reasons, because his compstang also had a matching headstock, this doesnt, an the sonic blue mustangs he was known for had white JBs and white switches, not black and black.

I doubt it, considering he rarely played it and it wasn't ever finished. to be honest im suprised they didn't wait til then to release the mustangs.

The fact that he seldom played the Jagstang live, won't matter when people out there will still buy the guitar and Fender will pocket the £££. Let the guitar playing masses decide for themselves whether they want to buy and play a Jagstang.

No but it will matter to fender marketing, remember they released the Jag for nevermind's 20th anniversary, and that was part of their marketing with it being the guitar he played the most at that time. The mustangs used all the in utero artwork in their ads and their marketing scheme was the whole "when he hit the stage it was usually with a mustang". To say they'd do that for the jag-stang, a guitar he said he didnt really like, and rarely played it at all, nevermind live, they're more likely to do a signature telecaster since he said that was his new favorite guitar.

I have to agree, the jag-stang needed tons of improvements, even Kurt seemed to think so, unfortunately he was never able to complete it. As for a telecaster, I'm not so sure about that, didn't it have a Gibson pickup in the neck? I guess they could put a Dimarzio PAF instead. It'd be an interesting guitar, but I don't think we really need more Kurt guitars.

His tele had a Gibson PAF in the neck and a JB in the bridge, but thats easy for them to do with a regular dimarzio PAF or even find a duncan equivalent. While the jagstang needed a bunch of tweaks for kurt's liking, the only thing i did was put a TOM in the bridge, lock it down, and change the bridge pickup and it feels great to me. As far as not needing any more Kurt guitars, same goes for clapton and pretty much every artist that they come out with 10 different models for. For me being a lefty though sometimes its cheaper. The jag only cost 1300 and that was with all the mods done, if i were to have an left handed jag imported from japan it would cost 1800 before having to route it and get the pickups and the pickguard so it was actually cheaper.

On the black pickup on the Sonic Blue one. The back up to the main In Utero tour Mustang had the black JB. He 2 Sonic Blue Mustangs on tour with HBs. The main one was the one with the white one in it, which is on display in Seattle. The one with the black HB is on display at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.
