dumb jag question

Ping! Mid-song, another string breakage at the saddle point and that locking button thingy does'nt work so i'm even more out of tune than i was before!

Anyone else suffer strings breaking on the saddles? Why? i'm thinking i'm just heavy handed coz i've looked at the saddles and there doesnt seem to be any rough areas so getting a file out seems pointless. And if anyone suggests Mustang bridge i'm leaving the forum forever 😆

Hmmm....

Red arrow: does the screw have jaged edges? and is it touching the string?

Blue arrow: Is the hex bolt jaged/protuding and causing the string to break?

Neither of them.

seems a bit ridiculous but i could inspect the saddles with a magnifying glass maybe there are rough edges that i just cant see 😕

I'm using gauge 10 strings if that helps.

this may seem stupid...but, are the strings that are breaking new or old?

also, are you using an alternative tuning that increases the tension on the string?

and finally, no matter what is happening here...if you have a string breaking in the same place over and over...there is definetaly a problem there that you aren't seeing. You just may have to break out the magnifying glass after all.

I wonder...if you were to completely remove the 2 hex bolts, flip the saddle completely over 180 degrees and reinstall the hex bolts, would have possibly solve the problem?

i believe the picture is originaly from the 22 frets website. where they later used autosol to sand down to the bare metal on all screw threads, saddles threads, grub screw threads and the assey. i don't know how they did it on such a micro scale though. it must've taken a lot of time. unless they simply left them all in a very abrasive dip of something. but even leaving them in a bucket of diesel for a month wouldn't do as much

I change strings monthly, so they are'nt old, and i dont use alternate tunings.

Flipping the saddles would be an option but like an #### i used 'loc-tite' to stop the grub screws moving.

I'll go for the easy option to start with...Rick's spray grease and if that does'nt work i'll pinch my daughters magnifying glass!

As for using 11's 😲

can't say I've broken a string on my jag at any point... but something I do on a Gibson- style guitar I have with a TOM is use Vaseline lip balm on the saddle groove. it actually works really well to keep the strings from breaking so quickly.

Sorry if you already know this - but are you depressing the trem before sliding the button towards the neck? It wont do anything if you just slide it without pushing the whammy bar down...

Well, if you set it up right, it should freely slide into place when tuned to pitch, but after breaking a string it should need a jiggle of the trem bar to get in place.

Yes i knew, i read up on the guitar on some Jag website. I tried it and it seems to slip, difficult to explain. Incidently that website described a full Jag set up...i got halfway through the page(s) and thought 'yeah righto!'. I love the guitar but i'm not the type to fiddle about for hours surrounded by allen keys and an engineers ruler checking everything to a fraction of a millimetre!

But i dont expect a string to break at every other gig on a 600 quid guitar.
