dumb jag question

Please excuse my ignorance, but how do you use the mute? I've never fiddled about with one...

I think you just push down on the chrome bit that should be above the foam, and the foam mutes/dampens the strings... Ive never used one either..

That seems like it'd be inconvenient while playing, maybe not. It just seems a bit clumsy to me. Do any Jag players here use them regularly?

it's not clumsy at all. and it takes half a second to flip on or off

but screws up the intonation when it's on.

about half a semi-tone, as you move up to the 12th fret (and not before!). nothing to worry about. infact even sounds pretty cool when so nicely out of key. and you all seemed to like that little tune i played and posted, with the mute on, a while back

I dont want this to be an ongoing thread but i thought i'd update what i've done after considering people's advice.

Today i shortened the D and G intonation screws just for peace of mind and i restrung the Jag with 11's.

I'm quite suprised how little difference there is in the feel from moving up from 10's 😎

Another question for experienced Jag owners; is it worth paying a tech to set the guitar up?

The guitar plays reasonable well but i think it could be better... i'd like it to be at its playable best.

Absolutely, Fran. Having a tech setup your guitar is something I do with almost every guitar I buy. Mostly because a tech will file a binding nut, dress your frets, intonate, set proper bridge height, etc...

Not sure about your neck of the woods, but my guy here charges anywhere from $30-$60 for a nice setup.

thats the thing techs in augustus endz may be upto date on seting up offsets but in this country unless you give em a strat or les paul there clueless . of course there will be the one's that do know how to setup different guitars but its finding them.

Well, i suppose the same principals apply to setting any guitar up but yes the Jag is a bit different and i dare say i'm the only Jag owner for miles. There's about 5 guitar shops round here and i dont recall any of them stocking Jags.

From reading up on the recommended set ups i'd say you've got to have knowledge of the Jag. I suppose i should stop being lazy and over cautious and do it myself, i'm afraid i might screw it up and end up hassling you lot for answers 🙄

For string breaks, it could be a number of things that are causing it...

Can't help ya there. Unless I'm actually holding the guitar, it's too hard to tell right now.

Tune-o-matic? I've considered that...i'll be honest i've nearly always owned guitars with that type of bridge so it would suit me just fine. hmmm....
