anyway, it's obvious that certain grades of wood are better quality than others, in terms of grain, knots, consistency etc. and you can use the heavier ones for a guitar, if you so wish. or you can use a lighter wood. or a plywood. it's really up to you. but i'd rather use a heavey wood for a guitar body

You can really feel the difference in wieght with alder vs. basswood. On average, alder is 30-50% heavier than basswood, and has more lows and mids than basswood does.

I would be willing to bet that most of you could not tell the difference between an alder, poplar, or basswood solidbody electric with the same electronics in a blind test.

Preference of bodywood is one thing, playing what you like is your prerogative, but I'm highly skeptical of most things people assume produce the tone of their favorite instruments: A. Because I've done some tests myself and B. because most of the world's great guitar builders have disproven many guitar myths time and time again and yet they still persist in the general public..

I know that with strats the tonality differences of alder vs. poplar vs. basswood is very difficult to hear for most people. And I have also encountered many people who swear Poplar is inferior tonewood for a strat when it is in fact no such thing. They're just going by what they have heard and bogus tone myths. Just ask anybody who actually makes strats for a living, you'd be suprised at what they'd say.

lol thats sad...I can tell that, thats easy, but if there was no difference between alder and basswood, then why does the CIJ jaguar cost half the price of the the AV jag? i could buy a cij jag and replace the pickups and the total cost would be about 820 compared to 1400 if i bought the AV. Oh yeah, and theres always that little mute that i wouldnt use.

BTW, I got the fender jaguar from the shop by my house, im pretty sure its alder, since it is heavier then my strat.

If there was no difference, then every guitar maker would use the cheapest wood they could use (hey it doesnt matter right?).

cij jags are alder now and are the same price as they were when they were basswood. the price of guitars in that price range has little to do with cost of materials.

That's really correct, with the best of gear and the most consistent of players in the correct environment, you'll hear the difference. I've had plywood bodies that recorded as well for my purposes as any hardwood. Look how many higher end guitars are made from basswood. The only reason I get cheesed about that even is the fact that basswood is inexpensive. Sure if you're showing grain, then wood matters, but I've seen some beautiful poplar in my day and some pretty poor alder or ash.
