hey

can anyone think of more songs for me to practice on..?

i've pretty much nailed come as you are for my first song besides

the ones i get from my tutor, which are more to do with chords and what not..

i just want something to keep the motivation up, preferably not nirvana though because i have guitar pro 5

and i can just lookup stuff there.. can't really think of anything that'd fit in the "beginner" catergory..

tried a few RHCP's and I was totally lost 😲

any help would be awesome.

Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin are pretty easy. Try some of that.

When I started I think I learnt pretty much everything by Nirvana, Greenday, the Chilis, the Foo Fighters, and then random songs that I liked, like Perfect Day by Lou Reed. Stick with the Chilis, you should be able to get most of the stuff off Californication. Try Scar Tissue, Parallel Universe, Otherside, Californication, and if you fancy a challenge, try Road Trippin'. That's a good album to learn off, because it's pretty much straight rock with one guitar most of the way through. I'd steer away from their other albums for a while, because the guitar is a little wishy washy, so to speak, and rather dificult to pin down.

One of the first songs i ever learned was "under the bridge". Of course it sounded terrible for the first week or so though.

That's what I'd tried over the last couple days and I was totally lost lol. I suppose I really should jump back on that proverbial horse and try again till I nail it 😎

Thanks dude I'll give it a go over the next couple of weeks. I've got 9 weeks off of school now so I've got plenty of time to practice. Just can't wait until my bid on eBay is won so I can get my Pignose 8watt amp, the Blues JNR is a touch too loud at night time like after 2am. 😕

Under the Bridge showcases Fruisciante's rhythm technique. It requires a fair degree of fret hand control as well as a canny strumming hand. Unless you practise it really slowly, you might find it a little dificult. But saying that, you should try to lear it at some point, and it's good to have a firm grounding in rhythm before moveing on to extensive lead work.

As for Zeppelin. You must learn Stairway. Them's the rules.

Zeppelin can hardly be deemed 'beginner-music'.

Maybe the intro to Heartbreaker but still.

I suppose I'll move onto them soon as I have another couple months under my belt.

I got Come as you are pretty much sounding good in quite a short amount of time.. Although that's not really that hard I must say it did at times really piss me off when i couldn't get a certain part to sound right.. 😈

To be honest, the first 4 years of learning guitar is kind of a haze. I remember, after two years of learning, people in college having a dig and saying I was pretty rubbish because all I could play were blues standards and a few Pixies songs, so I started teaching myself to shred and wail. Having acheived that goal, and owning everyones asses, I promptly never practised it ever again and now I can't really do it, partly because I don't want to, so I haven't actually really tried.

In around 2003, I started actually learning to play guitar properly, playing along with a few Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin records, and found that (probably helped along with the year and a half of shredding exercises) I was actually pretty good at it, as well as most of it being easy to work out and play along to simply by ear. It feels far more satisfying to struggle along, attempting to play something that you like and eventually acheiving it than it does sitting in your bedroom learning to out-Van-Halen someone when you're actually not into that crap in the first place. Just pick bands you like, get some tabs for it (or not), and start trying to play to it. Learn note association. You WILL get it sooner than you think, and you'll want to grin like a hyena and pat yourself on the back when you eventually do.

Wow dude. I thought you were having a go at me like you usually do to other people (I've been reading up on the forums since about June) but wow. Thanks for that, appreciate the insight.

Yeah I at the moment I sort've have two categories in which my learning really fits into.

First is the "must do" with all the technical stuff and learning chords and most of the theory.

This I do with my tutor because to be honest although I love technical-type music, I much more enjoy something with a little more edge.

When I'm at home I usually sit on my bed (I really do need to buy a stool lol) and print out a sheet of tab from one of twenty three odd thousand I have downloaded and learn it.

However in doing so I also kind've improvise with it myself and play around with it a bit. I prefer that than the authoritarian style of play.

Seriously I am so glad that I got a Jaguar for my first geetar! I love how the entire sound can change at the flick of a switch several times over! It took me about 2 days to learn what the switches do and how the sound is effected thanks to some flash file I found online, either posted here or on a google search I can't quite remember.

In having said that I now believe that the sound is more of a intermediate-advanced part of playing the guitar and actually playing it with the correct rhythm is more important than caring about if the tone is right or you'd like more distortion. That's my own personal opinion anyway.

I don't expect to be the next Zappa or anything overnight but I just would like to see some progression on my behalf you know.

Hence why I turned to these forums for help. I try not to post utter ####e, but sometimes it kinda slips out 😛

So yeah with the weird taste in music I have doesn't quite help with my quest to find some decent tabs. I'm into a lot of the stuff like Sublime, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, The Cure and ofcourse Nirvana but some of my more recent stuff would be more towards Dredg, Bright Eyes, Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene and that kinda sound.

Sorry for the useless ramblings but I was bored and thought I'd mutter a semi-life story.

Well with that said I'd still like a couple more bands/songs in which to print out some tabs so I can attempt at learning them over the next couple weeks that I have off of school.

It'd be heaps appreciated, thanks!

First of all, chord sequences n song structure crap, ignore it, throw it all out of the window. Look at the music you love, and look at how that is structured. If that's Nirvana or The Pixies, fair enough, you're going to learn some quite traditional chord sequences in some respect, and some relatively traditional song structuring (for nowadays, at least), and that would reach right through to Pink Floyd or early Genesis. But it's the fact that you're actually learning it almost innately, rather than reading it off a page because somebody with 18 years more "skill" than you has decided to write a book explaining how to aspire to his level of perfection.

There are people that think that you need to know all the scales and all the music theory in the world to be able to make decent music, but that's bull#### and they're pricks who just want to compete with other guitarists for musical knowledge, like Buddhists seeing who can meditate faster. It's musical awareness you're after, and no amount of books and lessons can give you that ability.

The absolute BEST thing you could do is just note association. Start picking out the notes in a song on your guitar. You might not be able to recognise a chord outright from just hearing it, but if you play enough notes on the neck, you're bound to hit it at some point. After all, there are only so many notes! Learn to play like that, and things start to fall into place as a guitarist.

my advice to you is go print out the modals and memorize them and learn them so you can play them with ease. Then, start to combine them into solos, riffs etc. You'll find that alot of classic rock and even present day bands derive alot of their stuff from a particular modal scale. For instance, Hendrix loved using the dorian scale in many of his songs:

^^ I second that idea. It'll really help. That being said, learning scales does help you and if you want to get better faster, or be able to solo like Randy Rhodes on crazy train etc. you'll need to learn as many scales, theory etc. Its one thing to be able to print out a tab to a van halen solo and learn it note for note-- any one could do that given enough time to practice it. The real skill comes in being able to write your own music and improv. Also, while learning some theory, scales etc. is important, don't force it and don't bother getting a book and working through it, you'll just bore yourself. Learn that stuff when you come to a point where you want to learn it and are determined to do so.

P.S.- sorry for the rambling post. Now get off the computer and start practicing! 😁

Yeah I totally agree with most if not all the things you mentioned there.

I also reckon that people now days are in fact either too focused on the music itself or a typical gear-head.

Either way they're not the least be efficient and usually never get anything done, well that's the case down here anyway.

Seriously I thank you for that. I suppose I was waiting for some kind've reassurance to continue on not learning chord-sequences and what not. 😛

EDIT: Oh incase you're wondering, no I'm not one of those rich kids with the cliche music phase thing happening. I used to do a lot of recordings and what not of Acid Trance and sold my decks which I got for free at a competition for DJ'ing here in my age grounp (They were a pair of Technics 1210 MK5's which I later sold for $1,400 and got my Jag) otherwise I wouldn't of been able to afford it, NO way. 😲

I don't regret it the slightest though, I love a challenge!

asking for a proper sonic youth tab, that will probly never happen. because they cant tune their guitars. well my first song also was come as you are. its a nice little tune, but the more you look at music played by other people you will start copieing them in your own songs(not that thats a bad thing) but id say hendrix licks are an easy way to learn(solo's not that much) i.e foxy lady, fire, and stuff like that, or his coever of the trogg's- wild thing. its just that kind of stuff thats nice, zappa will take a long road to reach. zappa licks can be easy or hard, useally pending on album. but just focus on the music you like, if you like a song take it to your tutor and say "teach me this please." just practice alot.

I followed Lennons solo career unconditionally though, but never quite liked the Beatles to the extent others did.

I'm more of a Dylan fan than anything else 😀

does anyone else remember the day that they could 'suddenly' do a powerchord/stretch that far? i remember trying for ages and ages to do it, but had to stop and get my fingers in the right place, then BAM! i could do it. wierd.

I was trying to explain this to my girlfriend when she was initially learning, and she couldnt get how it changes so fast, but in my experience it does.

until maybe this last year. i have never been that into learning other peoples songs. i mean i have in the past learnt the odd tune but for the most part i just liked making up my own melodies and what not.

dunno witch way would be best to learn but each to there own i suppose?

what i would say to you mr fetch is for starters you wanna learn chords as many as you can be arsed to , and i don't mean the names but just the shapes at least, there's lots (not just power chords) .

dunno if your teachers taught you this but if your learning a new chord, put your fingers where they need to go on the fretboard and bounce your fingers slightly in the chord shape and on the fretboard for a little bit and you will find when you change to that chord from another your fingers will find the notes easier hope that made sense?

Glad she actually did now as I now have at least one thing to thank my parents for. 😛

.. But yeah Bob Dylan idolized Guthrie similar to Kurt looking upto Lennon although I still think that has more to do with commercial value than anything.

Guthrie, great musician though, might look up on google if there's any decent tabs of his.. think I had This Is Your Land somewhere on my computer. 🙄

yeah, i remeber just one day, i was able to play chords(my problem was with open chord changes)
