One of the interesting things I did when i took lessons earlier thisyear was to learn some other styles like Jazz, Blues, Surf Rock etc. Previously I could only really play powerchords and the basic chords. Now I'm playing a wide range of stuff. Sure, I understand the basics of pentatonics/blues scales, but hell if someone said play this one, i would be sure. One thing I'm yet to pickup is what ek mentioned, note association. Once you get it, it makes life soo much easier.
My main problem at the moment is mainly that. Sure I can easily work stuff out in octaves but working out between strings still gets me. Most of all, dont worry if you cant read music, tabs and a good ear is all you need if you want to learn covers, same thing when you wish to record your own material one day.
