actually...yes...I have played drums in a band...and all I ever did was try to just listen to the bass player, for the most part. But, I do agree...musicianship is quite important.
A few weeks ago I saw this blues band...they were missing half of their musicians due to colds, so 3 others from another band joined them. They had never played together before, and with the exception of the drummer and bass player, you couldn't tell. The bass player was exceptional, older and well seasoned. The drummer was young, but fairly good. It was amusing to see the pissing contest happening between them in the first set. You could tell the bassist was used to leading, but the drummer was also used to leading. By the 2nd set, the bassist just gave up and followed him... 😆
