Leftie with small fingers - jazzmaster or jaguar?

Those are some freaky long fingers, almost double the length of mine.

I've actually been deciding on which Jag to get. I was gonna get either the white or the '3ts' is what fenderjapan call it, sunburst I guess it is.

However, I remember reading somewhere, could've even been on this forum, that Fender Japan use the top quality components, top quality wood or something, only on the 3ts/sunburst one and on all other models they use something less good. Am I wrong in reading that?

the sunburst ones had alder bodies instead of basswood, because basswood doesn't have a good grain.

everything else would be the same. and i remember they changed that for those odd-coloured cij's they started importing a few years back, i think those were solid-colour alders.

I'm not really up on my carpentary...what difference would the body types actually make then? I can imagine a different weight or something? What about sound etc?

The harder the wood the brighter the sound

The lighter or softer the wood the deeper the sound.

sound difference is a bit of a touchy subject, for some. but basswood does make the guitar a hell of a lot lighter, and dings more easily because it's softer.

bandit, i'd have thought that the harder the wood, the bassier the tone. and generally more resonance. at least, that's how the theory goes...

oh i dont know I heard that on the tour of the fender factory that the softer woods absorb some of the sound and the harder woulds bounce it off. Who knows.

i agree - my basswood guitars just seem duller and less alive than the others.

plus i like the feel of a HEAVY guitar!

I see. Then does Fender Japan still only use Alder on the sunburst or is it all Alder these days? I want the white guitar, but am prepared to get the sunburst if it's the only Alder one and therefore the best quality.

Yup, I emailled the dudes at guitarjapan a few days ago, got a reply today, their jags are all Alder.

Alder is a more 'close-grain' wood than basswood or say mahogany so it does produce a brighter sound, ash is the same.

One of the reasons Les Pauls have a darker sound is because of the mass of mahogany.

Likewise. When you say you play like him, you mean you hold down the strings with your right hand and strum with your left? I see that as the only similarity.

yup! I play righty guitars left handed. I'm considerin a Lefty strat, tho.

I've played my sisters old squire 'upside down' and it was really difficult, just really uncomfortable. So I gotta ask, why do it man!

Some do it because they can't afford or get hold of left handed guitars, most do it because they think it looks cool. Guitars aren't designed to be played reversed, they're contoured for comfort. There's no real point flipping.
