Personally, I think its much much better when used with an amp. It works fine as a distortion pedal, and the mini switches offer a lot of tonal options. One thing i particularly like, the switch on the side (lead = marshall, normal = mesa, bass = fender) changes how the rest of the settings react with each other. Because things are covered more than once (eg a high knob, as well as the lead/normal/bass switch, and mid switches etc.) you can have a similar sound in terms of how much treble you have, but a totally different tone overall. It's a very very versatile pedal.
