I'm sure just about everyone on this board can tell you of a bargain they picked up from eBay at some point or another. You can be as paranoid as you like, sooner or later you'll get over it and trust eBay and realise how much time you've been wasting. The guys at eBay are trying their hardest to ensure their site is a safe and trustworthy place to do business, and I'd say they're doing a very, very good job.
Well, as I said - I know the trusted sellers exist, but they can be hard to come by in my experience - thats why I avoid ebay in general. Notice that in this particular case it is a consideration, given the high ratings for the seller.
Well, dont assume I havent bought anything from ebay before. I used to have an ebay account 4 or 5 years ago that I used to buy rare band t-shirts. I wasnt ever ripped off, but these were fairly inexpensive items, not talking guitars $1000+; clearly the stakes are higher if something goes wrong.
I probably am missing out, but I feel its my job to be skeptical first. Although, some people will not buy ANYTHING online at all, so I could be worse!
As I hope you'll be able to tell, I am not 100% against buying on ebay; its just that I would rather explore other, more reliable alternatives first. If the ebay seller is awesome, and the item is hard to find, I am definitely alot more likely to pull the trigger.
