It'd probably rip through a pickguard becuase its so easy to cut. Try it on a bit of wood first to get a feel for it 😉

My dad has some sorta evil router from at least the 60's(?) that I used it to cut another hole for a single coil in my Ibanez, if a router that old was easy to use, I'm sure a newer one would be pretty easy.

... jazzy pickups are pricey... i am thinking about what mcthingo said how close would a GFS P90 come to the sound of a jazzy? then i could just use the PU covers.

that first paragraph did not say if it was talking about jm pickups, but i would be inclined to think that yes, they would have single magnets. cymaster, you're talking out your ass. even if jazzmaster pickups are 'closer in construction' to strat pickups, the length of string which they pick up is much greater than that of a strat pickup, meaning that their harmonic content is extremely different, meaning that their sound is extremely different. in addition to this, their impedance is almost exactly that of a p-90, meaning that the filtration of this harmonic content is much closer to that of a p-90 pickup than a strat pickup. i'm inclined to think that you don't know how theyre constructionally different, and that its just something you heard, but the constructional difference to which you are referring is probably the bar magnet/rod difference. these are just two different methods of creating a magnetic field around the strings. magnet strength is only relevant in terms of the size of the magnetic field (how much string is being picked up) and string pull, which can alter the vibrations of the string itself. this is a ridiculous point to make because the string length picked up is obviously going to be closer between a jazzy pu and a p-90 than a jazzy pu and a strat pu. stop talking bull#### like mcpedo.

also, if you had ever played a strat, jazzmaster, and p-90 guitar, you would know that a jazzmaster is closer in sound to a p-90.

How much do you want to spend? It seems like on ebay you would get a set for about AUD $150 (inc postage). I would consider this to be reasonable. Each time I look at pickup sets at music stores they are usually much more expensive than that.

just spent a good ten minutes typing a detailed response to this when it made me log back in... 😠

anyway, the gist of it was that a p-90 won't exactly replicate the jazzmaster sound, and that the real difference in price is going to come down to pg modification. also, i'd recommend either switching to 1M pots or bypassing vol/tone in order to get closer to the jazzmaster sound. if you are going to be playing clean, you might notice a difference between the jazzmaster pu's and the p-90's, but distorted it probably wouldn't be all that noticeable. also, id suggest you email the guys at GFS and ask what the DC resistance of the mean 90 is. (for the dream 90, its pretty close to jazzmaster specs) good luck!

The first one's look like a good deal, but I've heard good about those SD Jazzmaster pups

It it was me (which of course, it is not, but still...) I would go the Fender ones.

They are:

a) Obviously much cheaper (about AUD $30 if you buy two)

😎 Fender, so you KNOW you will get a jazzmaster sound.

But the SD's might be better, vintage specs and all...

edit: I like how the SD's point out that they "Works especially well with rosewood fingerboards". I didn't know that fingerboards and pickups interacted in the slightest 😆
