I strongly doubt if anybody here picked up a guitar and immediately started by doing what nobody had done before. I think the reason most people start playing guitar is because they hear something they like and it inspires them to do so. And it makes sense to want to emulate it.
One man's "ripoff" is another man's "loving tribute".
This is absolutely true. But the pedals that kurt used would never give you anywhere near the same sound. This is because stuff gets cleaned up in recording and edited. Not to mention that there were different amps connected to the guitars with different cables, and these amps were connected to different cabs made from different woods with different speakers. Plus the microphone and position of the microphone makes a difference. Playing my old strat through my Boss ME-50 on the MT-2 setting and the built in chorus get me far closer to the sounds I heard on nevermind than my Duncan JB equipped jagstang with my small clone + DS-1 + Big muff.
Also what is the biggest factor in tone??? Yourself. You aren't kurt, you don't have his playing style, you don't strum the same, you don't fret the same etc.
I was the same. Why else do you think I had all that stuff?? If I had known better, I would have sent my strat to a shop to get it set up and I would have got rid of my old marshall and bought a champion 600.
Its the same reason I want a Jackson Kelly, because I like marty friedman. He played one and looked cool with it, and I think its a cool guitar. The crate is a slightly different story though - He only used the crate on my least favorite megadeth albums and on his J-pop crap.
However, I've learned to put my own spin on things. I have my own favorite pickups, I like my own sort of thing - my kelly will have a thick neck and better upper fret access and a Crunchy pat pickup with a hardtail bridge instead of marty's thin necks, bareknuckle pickups and string-thrus/kahlers.
